I have 6, 6 foot tall (6 shelves each) bookshelves filled with SFBC books collected over a span of 30 years. Unfortunately, ebooks and Amazon helped in the demise of SFBC.
I am from the Bahamas and remember seeing the ad in Omni Magazines. My sister lived in North Carolina, so I ordered the 3 free sci-fi books, one of which was Asimov's Foundation Trilogy.. And I was hooked for life on Science Fiction Books.
I joined the SFBC when it began. I had just turned 8, and saved my allowance to buy the books. The incentive for joining was a ticket on the first commercial flight to the moon! I just knew I would cash in on that. I still have the ticket, but am now almost 80, and now that my favorite SF connection for all those years has gone to sleep, I will stop waiting. R.I.P.
My friend lost his entire collection of SFBC from Super Storm Sandy. Is your collection for sale? All he has left are the a few years of the Things To Come pamphlets.
I joined the SFBC in the early 1980s. The free books I received were The Chronicles of Amber Volumes I and II by Roger Zelazny. Great writer, great stories! I discovered many great writers and books by being a member. Asimov, Clarke, Heinlein, and many, many more.
This started my book collecting hobby, mostly Science Fiction and Fantasy. I have well over 300 SFBC books in my collection. I created a database, which includes most of my collection. After 45 years there's over 1500 items in it. What a long strange trip it's been!
I stopped acquiring physical books several years ago because my book collection became too large! Ebooks and audiobooks have been most of what I buy currently.
I ended my membership with the SFBC a few years ago. I got tired of refusing my monthly new book offers. I'm not surprised that the SFBC has ended, but it's still sad.
It breaks my heart that SFBC is gone. I admit that I was turned off by them promoting books other than science fiction, like romance or self improvement books. I used to buy often from them, right around Christmas when they had sales. Then they switched to wanting to sell me book credits by automatically charging my credit card. It’s just a real shame and I feel bad for not supporting them in the previous years. I admit that lately reading has been the last thing on my mind. I have my SFBC copies and love them. I’ll cherish them for as long as I live.
Yes, a couple of years ago I looked it up to see if it was still around. I was pleased to learn it still existed, then disappointed when I went to the website and saw them promoting thrillers and romances in addition to science fiction and fantasy. It indicated the owners weren't committed to the SFBC as a brand. :(
Updated cover image to a version including the Cosmic Codex logo.
